Should the Beavers Maintain Liability Insurance?
RCABC recently reduced the liability portion of its insurance policy from $5 to $2 million. The Association’s primary interest continues to be coverage of semi-professional independent canoeing instructors with the addition of kayaking, standup paddleboards and most recently guiding. We have been paying RCABC a little over $2,000 for several years now for this coverage. As part of the per member fee we also pay a 10% “administration” fee to RCABC. Following several years of concern and much informal discussion perhaps it is time to revisit the issue of whether or not we choose to continue this coverage past June 1, 2018. It should be noted that the reduced liability may have resulted in a slightly lower per person coverage cost in 2017. ($9.60 vs $10.89)
I have attached:
- A legal opinion,
- RCABC Club Trip Sanctioning guidelines, (It is not currently ascertainable if these are in force or by what authority),
- The current 2017-2018 BCC Certificate of Insurance, (naming City of Burnaby), as a coinsured,
- The 2016-2017 BCC Certificate of Insurance.
Issues to consider:
- Burnaby requires insurance for use of their facilities. However if you do not have insurance they will sell it to you at $1.00/hour for under 100 people. This would cost us less than $24/year.
- The Forest service requires a minimum $2 million liability policy for thenon-exclusive use by any group of 15 or more. Any individual is still welcome there.
- Previously the Ukrainian Hall required a “Statement of Co-Insurance.”
- The attached legal opinion recommends that Club members be encouraged to check their Homeowner’s Insurance policy for its liability clause with a view to ensuring it is at least $2 million.
Timeline
- I suggest we make the above information known to the Club membership and invite expert opinion between now and October 1st, (June Executive motion).
- At the October Executive meeting we vote to either continue the current policy or to recommend to the 2018 AGM that Liability insurance be discontinued after May 31, 2018.
